How to judge an extension before you install it
- Permissions: If it wants to read and change data on all sites, it needs a very good reason.
- Recent updates: Not updated in a year is a risk.
- Developer and privacy policy: Look for a real company and a clear policy.
- Reviews and installs: Useful signal, not proof, when combined with the checks above.
Extensions people actually keep
- Writing and grammar: Grammarly, polish emails and posts as you type.
- Summarizers: Merlin, Monica, Sider, turn long pages and videos into short briefs.
- Research: Perplexity and Gemini extensions, cited answers without opening ten tabs.
- Reading: Use one summarizer, not five. Pin only what you use daily.

ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now act on your tabs
On 15 Oct OpenAI's official ChatGPT extension for Chrome (7 million installs, current version 1.26.1005.11759) gained computer-use abilities, reported by The Verge. Tag "Chrome" in the ChatGPT app and the assistant can read and act across your open tabs: compare products on three sites, fill forms, draft emails. In ChatGPT Work mode it can send messages, fill forms, and download files. The sidebar ChatGPT follows your browsing.
The privacy side matters here. The AI sees your open tabs, and the extension asks for permission to read your history and files. That is a lot of access. Only enable tab access when you need the task done, and turn it off after. If you are privacy-sensitive, this feature is the one to think twice about before flipping on.
Gemini Auto Browse reaches India
Google rolled Gemini Auto Browse out in India on 7 Oct for desktop and Android, alongside Gemini in Chrome on Android. Auto Browse handles multi-step web tasks, forms, grocery orders, hotel and flight comparisons, in a separate tab, and pauses for confirmation before sensitive actions. For now it is AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers only in India, English only. One outlet reports daily limits of 20 tasks on Pro and 200 on Ultra; Google has not published official limits, so check your plan. It started as a US desktop preview in January 2026. If you travel between regions, expect availability to differ by country.
Gemini 4 Argon fixed a class of Chrome crashes
Google says it used its new Gemini 4 Argon model to separate core webpage handling from a 6-million-line legacy folder inside Chromium's roughly 40-million-line codebase, eliminating one category of crashes. Nearly 300 agent-generated code changes went in since late July, each reviewed by a human. That claim comes from a single secondary report of Google's announcement, so treat the details as reported. Separately, Chrome 152 shipped with over 300 security fixes, a good reason to let Chrome update itself.
A setup that works
Install one summarizer, one writing helper, and one research tool. Pin only the ones you use daily. Turn off the rest. If Chrome feels slower after installing an extension, remove it. No feature is worth a slow browser. Review extensions once a month and delete anything you have not used in 30 days.
