Free Trials, Student & Free AI Versions: Try Before You Pay

You do not need to pay on day one. Almost every major AI tool has a free tier, a trial, or a student offer. The trick is knowing which free option is real, what it actually gives you, and how to cancel before it charges you. We checked the official pages where we could, and we flagged the offers where sources still conflict.

THE FREE TRIALS GUIDE
One rule before you start: Use only the official site or app to claim an offer. Sites selling promo codes, shared accounts, or cheap Plus logins are almost always scams or terms violations. If an offer sounds too good, it probably is.

How trials and student offers actually work

There are four different kinds of free, and they are not the same. A free tier is free forever but limited. A trial is full access for a short time, then it charges you unless you cancel. A student offer is free or discounted for verified students, usually for a year, and it also auto-renews unless you cancel. An open model is free to download, but you pay for the computer to run it.

Before you sign up for anything paid, do three things. First, read what happens after the trial ends. Second, check whether you need a payment method to start. Third, set a calendar reminder two days before the trial ends. That one reminder saves more money than any coupon.

Google Gemini: the clearest student offer right now

Google announced in August 2026, on its official blog, that eligible college students can get one year of Google AI Pro free in the US (normally $19.99 per month) and one year of Google AI Plus free outside the US. The US plan includes higher Gemini limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and more storage. The outside-US plan includes Gemini Omni, higher limits, and 400GB storage.

How to claim: Go to the official Google AI student page, verify your student status (in many countries through SheerID or document upload), and confirm the plan and end date in your account before you rely on it.

Watch out: Secondary reporting says the offer is redeemable until 31 December 2026 in many regions. Offers, regions, and deadlines change, so treat that date as reported, not guaranteed. Check the official page on the day you claim.

16 Oct notes: The free-tier cut is now settled: multiple outlets confirm from Google's own support docs that free accounts run Flash-Lite only since 9 Oct, with Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.6 Flash moved to paid plans. Check your own account to confirm what your free tier includes. Developers: Gemini 4 Argon went generally available 13 Oct at intro API pricing of $2 / $10 per 1M in/out through 30 Nov 2026, then $4 / $20. It is not on the free API tier.

ChatGPT: free tier yes, plus a 2026 student offer with a deadline

ChatGPT has a free tier for everyone. That is the safe starting point. It covers everyday chats, drafting, and homework help. Paid Plus adds higher limits, deeper research, and more uploads.

For students, multiple October 2026 guides now converge on one offer. OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible full-time and part-time college and graduate students at qualifying US institutions four free months of ChatGPT Plus, including ChatGPT Work. You verify through SheerID, a payment method is required, and you must claim by 31 October 2026. After the four free months, the plan renews at $20 per month unless you cancel. Apple App Store and Google Play billing are not supported for the offer while store-billed.

16 Oct notes: 15 days remain to claim. Set a calendar reminder for one week before the deadline, then decide with a cool head.

What to do: Check the official ChatGPT students page on the day you read this and confirm the plan, free period, renewal amount, and billing date in your own account before you finish activation. If you do not see an offer there, assume there is none. Ignore any site selling ChatGPT promo codes, OpenAI does not use generic promo codes for Plus.

Claude, Perplexity, Cursor, and GitHub Student Pack

ToolWhat is reportedWhat to verify
ClaudeFree web chat, capped. No individual student discount: multiple Oct 2026 guides report Anthropic offers no student price on Pro. Claude for Education is bought by the institution, not the student.Official Claude pricing page, and your school IT for Education access.
PerplexityFree basic searches. Education Pro is reported at $10 per month via SheerID in several Oct 2026 guides, but another Oct 2026 check found no such plan on Perplexity's own public pricing page. Treat the $10 figure as unconfirmed.perplexity.ai/students on the day you read this. If the price is not listed there, assume it does not apply to you.
CursorHobby plan is free for everyone. The legacy student discount (12 free months of Pro) stopped new sign-ups on 25 June 2026, per Cursor's own docs, which cite fraud; existing redeemers keep their rate until the plan expires. One third-party guide still advertises a 1-year free Pro via SheerID, but an Oct 2026 tools review found no standing student offer on Cursor's pages, only campus event promotions. Conflicting: do not assume a free year. Fall 2026 campus event credits are the replacement route, with no dates or amounts announced yet. Old articles quoting the free year are stale.cursor.com/students on the day you read this; if no offer is listed there, assume there is none.
GitHub Student PackWidely reported student bundle with Copilot and other dev tools.education.github.com/pack, eligibility, and which tools you actually need.

We list these as reported in community lists, not as confirmed offers, because student pages change without notice. The pattern is the same every time: verify on the official page, screenshot the terms, and set a cancel reminder.

Chinese models: free in a different way

Chinese labs are a big part of why free AI is so good in 2026. DeepSeek offers free chat with its V4 Flash model and open weights under MIT. Qwen (Alibaba) offers free chat plus open weights for many models, with the largest Max models API-only. Kimi K3 (Moonshot) is open-weight with a custom licence. GLM-5.3-Flash (Z.ai) is open-weight under MIT.

For most readers, the practical free route is simple: use DeepSeek chat or Qwen chat in the browser for everyday work, and try the open weights only if you are comfortable running models or using a hosted API. Do not paste private, client, or unreleased work into any free chat, Chinese or not, without checking its privacy settings.

How to personalize any AI tool (so it actually feels like yours)

Free tools feel generic because most people skip setup. Spend 10 minutes on this and every answer gets better.

  1. Tell it who you are: Your job, your audience, and your language. Example: “I am a final-year student in Dhaka. I write in plain English for readers in Europe. Keep sentences short.”
  2. Tell it how you like answers: Length, tone, and format. Example: “Give me bullets first, then a short paragraph. No jargon. If you are unsure, say so.”
  3. Give it your material: Paste your syllabus, brief, or draft. Ask it to use only that material for study plans or summaries.
  4. Save one good prompt: When an answer is good, save the exact prompt you used. Reuse it instead of starting from scratch.
  5. Correct it once, clearly: “That was too formal. Rewrite it like I am explaining it to a friend.” One clear correction beats five vague ones.

Most tools let you save these preferences as custom instructions, memory, or a project. Use that feature, it is the difference between a generic chatbot and a tool that actually knows your work.

Free vs paid: when should you pay?

Pay only when you hit a free limit every week. If you hit the limit once a month, free is fine. If you hit it every day, paid will save you real time. Pay for one tool at a time, use it for 30 days, then decide. Do not stack three paid subscriptions in the same week.

A good test: would you still pay if the tool only saved you 30 minutes a week? If yes, it is worth it. If no, stay free.

Cancel checklist: do this before every trial ends

Copy this list:
  1. Set a calendar reminder 2 days before the trial ends.
  2. Open Settings, then Billing, and check the renewal date and price.
  3. Decide: keep, downgrade to free, or cancel.
  4. If you cancel, screenshot the confirmation. Keep it until the next billing date passes.
  5. Check your bank statement the week after, just in case.

Common traps

Bottom line: Start free, personalize the tool, use it for real work for 30 days, and pay only when the free limit actually blocks you. That is how you get value without wasting money.
